Bennedict Mathurin and Shayeann Day-Wilson have been selected as the Toyota Players of the Week for the week from November 29 - December 5.
Mathurin scored 29 points and 6 rebounds on Sunday, leading Arizona to a 90-65 win over Oregon State. The 6’7” guard shot 11/18 overall including 4/9 from 3-point line as Arizona remains undefeated so far this season. Before signing with the Arizona Wildcats (NCAA), the Montreal, QC native attended NBA Academy Latin America and was named an all-star at the Basketball Without Borders Global event in Chicago during the 2020 NBA All-Star weekend. In his freshman year with the Wildcats he averaged 10.8 points, 4.8 rebounds per game. This past summer, Mathurin was a member of Canada’s U19 National Team who took the bronze medal at the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup where he averaged 16.1 points, 4 rebounds and 48.8 percent from the floor for the tournament.
Day-Wilson has led the Blue Devils in scoring their last three wins, with 26 (over Troy), 19 (over Iowa) and 14 (over Penn). In the game against Troy, Shy hit 8/10 from the 3-point line, tying a Duke record for most in a game, and recorded 26 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists during the game, she became the second Freshman in Duke history to record such a line and was named the ACC Freshman of the Week. The Toronto, ON native just completed a successful high school career at Crestwood Secondary School and is making a splash in her freshman year with Duke University (NCAA). The 5’6” point guard repped the red and white at the FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup this past summer where she ranked second in scoring for the event, averaging 18.1 points, 5.7 assists and 1.3 steals for the tournament, leading Canada to a 5th place finish.
